Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ging er wieder nach Nordamerika. 1947 heiratete er die brasilianische Sopranistin Bidu Sayão (1902 -1999); er lebte zeitweilig in Brasilien, dann in New York. Er war u.a. der Lehrer von Regina Resnik. - An seiner Stimme bewunderte man die Wärme des Timbres ebenso wie die dramatische Ausdruckskraft und die hohe Musikalität des Vortrags.
